Community Development Grants for 2011
Each year the Grants Committee must select from a variety of worthy community development projects. Successful proposals are characterized by their high impact, innovation, and valuable service to an underserved segment of our community. Congratulations to this year's grant winners.

for Feeding the Community-Warehouse Upgrades
Based on Lake County research of all schools, in our area, there approximately 4000 children that will not have a meal over the weekends. Research shows that many of these students’ last meals are on Friday from the free and reduced school lunch program. FCC believes it is not only our responsibility, but also the responsibility of every individual to help our children in South Lake. The warehouse upgrades will help facilitate FCC’s Feeding Programs.
for World War II Museum (Quonset Hut)
The grant request will cover the costs associated with conversion of the WWII Quonset hut into a museum. The South Lake County Historical Society estimates that the museum will draw thousands of veterans to the Historic Village. The Quonset hut is another key element of Clermont's Historic Village.
for Utility Support
FAITH Neighborhood Center is seeking financial support to provide utilities assistance to families in danger of having utility service discontinued. FAITH neighborhood has historically provided utilities support to 10 families per week or 500 families each year when funds are available. FAITH Neighborhood Center provides up to $75 per family. Clients can receive support once during a six month period.
for Comprehensive, Unduplicated Crisis Services
Through their unduplicated crisis services, Haven of lake & Sumter Counties hopes to reach victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in south Lake County. Haven also seeks to keep individuals safe from harm that currently live in "at-risk" environments while educating the community regarding the risks of domestic violence and sexual assault.
for Self Pay Client Scholarships
The goal of this project is to provide scholarship monies for clients to attend the training programs at a discounted rate. Without the scholarship monies, these clients may not be able to attend and unless funding sources are secured we will not be able to offer a discounted rate. The Medicaid Waiver waitlist has not decreased over the past year. Medicaid Waiver funding continues to be cut and changes to client's tiers continue to affect their services. Even those who are receiving the Medicaid Waiver have had their services reduced.
for Share-A-Night
The Share-A-Night program ensures that no family in need of services through the Ronald McDonald House program will be denied those services based upon an inability to pay. Ronald McDonald houses provide a warm, friendly home away from home for families of children receiving medical care in the Orlando area. Funds from this grant will be used to underwrite the cost of 50 overnight stays by south Lake County residents at one of the Ronald McDonald Houses.
for Making Breakfast Count
Bread of Life Fellowship. Inc. currently provides food to over 1,000 families each month in South Lake County through designated and affiliated food programs. All of these families are at or below poverty level. All of the children from these Families are on free meal programs through the school system. Making Breakfast count is a program to help these families have the healthy whole grain breakfast cereal that their children need and deserve when they are not in school during the thanksgiving, Christmas 2011 holidays and spring break 2012 timeframe.
for The Edge Memorial United Methodist Church Distribution Site
This new site serves Groveland, Mascotte, Clermont and surrounding Communities of South Lake County. The Hearts and Hands Food Ministry network is helping to initiate this new site in partnership with Edge Memorial UMC. The goal of this project is to help supplement the food needs of families in South Lake County.
for Purchase of Fiction Titles for High School Aged Students
This request will cover the costs of purchasing age appropriate fictional works from publishers that specialize in school libraries. The grant will be divided equally among elementary, middle and high school levels. The library budget continues to get cut and grants are used to supplement library materials and resources. The Cooper Memorial Library association wants to encourage reading by helping the library stock books if interest to the children and youth of the south Lake Community.
for Women's Counseling
The grant request is for women's counseling services through New Beginnings. The goal is to heal emotional and psychological wounds. The belief is that the healing of body and spirit will provide for a smoother transition from New Beginnings for the female clients and their children.
for Santa Fun Run
The Santa Run for Charities is a 5K run for charity that takes place along the Clermont Waterfront on December 10, 2011. Each runner will dress in a Santa Costume. The rotary Club expects to net about $5,000 from the event. The revenues will enhance the Rotary Club’s capacity to provide aid to needy families.
for Community Development
Christian Men in Action is asking for $2,000.00. They will apply $1,250.00 toward the purchase of toys for their annual Christmas Eve Block Party. As indicated before and with today’s economical conditions, whether would like to give each child that attends at least one toy for Christmas. They would also apply $250.00 toward the Health Fair to provide more activities for the youth and apply $500.00 to provide for food at the Kick It Off event which is our summer festival event or as it is sometimes called, a community family reunion with the aid of Clermont Police Department.
for Community Bereavement Services
Bereavement services are available to adults and children experiencing grief, even if no relative or friend was on the Cornerstone Hospice program. Support groups, private counseling and even overnight camping experiences for children and teens make Hospice the leading resource in addressing grief and loss. This program will serve more than 150 children and 1,000 adults this year as monitored by monthly counselor reports.
for Elderly and Disabled Social Visits
Elderly and disabled people sometimes suffer from feelings of social isolation, depression, onset of dementia. LovExtension will visit clients on a weekly basis. They will provide a hot meal, play games, read and talk.
for 4th Annual Fine Arts Fest
The purpose of the Fine Arts Fest is to promote community involvement and advance artistic appreciation and awareness through endorsement of the fine arts. In doing so, the academy hopes to strengthen community ties while nurturing self-expression and personal development of participants.
