Types of funds

In addition to explanations of the types of endowment funds we offer, we have also provided samples of fund agreements to give you a sense of how a community foundation operates and to illustrate the ease of using our services. There is flexibility in many of these documents and we are eager to discuss with you how we can help connect you with causes that matter most to you.

Establishing charitable funds with a Community Foundation presents you, the donor, with a variety of benefits and advantages including:

  • Zero taxation of investment income
  • No annual pay-out requirements
  • Maximum tax deductions: up to 50% of adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash gifts; up to 30% of AGI for appreciated property
  • Easy administration: all records and accounting are performed by the Community Foundation
  • Community Foundation grantmaking expertise
  • Donors may retain advisory control over grants from funds
  • Zero or low costs
  • Click here to view a side by side comparison of four approaches to giving.

Donor Advised Funds
You can have ongoing involvement in the use of your gift. You work with our professional program staff to identify ways to use dollars from the Donor Advised Fund you establish to address the community needs you care about most. Your recommendations are submitted to our board for approval; we then distribute grant dollars. [Sample Agreement] Learn more…

Seed Funds
A Seed Growth Fund with the Community Foundation of South Lake County gives you, as the donor, an opportunity to grow your fund over a period of three years. An individual, family or an organization can make a minimum gift of as little as $500.00 and then make contributions either monthly, yearly or according to another set schedule. Once your fund reaches the $5,000 level, on or before the three year time period, annual grants from the earnings can be awarded to nonprofit organizations of the donor’s choice. Learn more…

Unrestricted Funds
Your gift can address evolving community needs—including future needs that are difficult to anticipate at the time your gift is made. We evaluate all aspects of community well-being—arts and culture, education, health and human services, neighborhood revitalization, and more. The flexibility of your unrestricted gift enables the Community Foundation of South Lake County program experts to respond to the most pressing needs, today and tomorrow. Learn more…

Field of Interest Funds
You can target your gift to address needs in an important area of community life. Some examples include the Arts, AIDS, Aging, or At-risk youth. You identify your personal interest area when you make your gift. Our board then awards grants to community organizations and programs that make a difference in the field of interest you have selected. [Sample Agreement] Learn more…

Scholarship Funds
You can invest your gift in our community’s future and show students you care. We will work with you to determine the criteria students must meet to receive the Scholarship you establish. Your assistance will help our students achieve their academic and career goals. [Sample Agreement] Learn more…

Designated Funds
You can direct your gift to a specific nonprofit organization or purpose. As the donor, you may choose to provide ongoing funding for a senior center, museum, or virtually any nonprofit charitable organization. Nonprofit organizations can themselves use a Designated Fund through the community foundation to build their endowment and enhance their ability to accept large and complex gifts. [Sample Agreement] Learn more…

Organizational Endowment Funds
Establishment of an Organizational Endowment Fund with the Community Foundation is an easy way for your nonprofit to create a reliable revenue stream in perpetuity. An initial gift of $5,000 is all that is required to get started. The original principle or corpus will never be spent and as the Organizational Endowment Fund grows, your organization can request disbursements from income earned, reinvest earnings, or make additional deposits, thereby growing the corpus for increased revenue potential. The Foundation’s economies of scale and pooled assets give your organization the benefits of a diversified investment portfolio and low investment fees that otherwise come only with larger funds.
