Early Leaders...
Mr. George Hovis has actively supported the south Lake County community for over 40 years. Mr. Hovis brought his expertise and dedication to bear for the citizens of south Lake County. He has been a staunch advocate for underserved populations, education, health and youth activities. His leadership in educational causes is evidenced by his service on the Lake Sumter Community College Board of Trustees where he helped secure the land purchase for the current south Lake Campus, his service on both the Lake County Minority Task Force and Lake County Excellence in Education Committee.

Mr. Hovis was instrumental in crafting the contract between South Lake Hospital and Orlando Regional Healthcare System that established the South Lake Community Foundation and $9,000,000 endowment to benefit the citizens of south Lake County. His extensive list of awards includes: South Lake Chamber’s Gem of the Hills; Citizen of the year in 2000; Boy Scouts Golden Eagle award; and South Lake Black Achievers Humanitarian award. Mr. Hovis retired in 2008 and passed the torch to the next generation of community leaders.

Early Leaders...
Mr. Donald Wickham predicted the rapid growth of south Lake County when he first moved to Clermont in 1983 as the manager of the Leesburg SunTrust Bank. As the influence of the bank grew, so too did Mr. Wickham’s community involvement. He served on the original South Lake Hospital Board of Trustees and oversaw the transition to the partnership with Orlando Regional Healthcare System. This transition included the genesis of the Community Foundation of South Lake.

His 16 years of dedication, vision, love of community and determination helped grow the new South Lake Hospital campus and improve the quality and scope of health services in the community. A dedicated family man and community servant, Don Wickham was awarded the South Lake Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1995. This public recognition of his service was something that he never sought but humbly accepted. Don’s presence is keenly missed by all those who were touched by his service.

Community Foundation of South Lake

Gifts made to the Foundation will grow and continue to impact your community...now and forever
Our History
In the beginning...

The Community Foundation of South Lake was formed on June 30, 1995 as the result of an agreement between the South Lake Hospital and Orlando Health (formerly Orlando Regional Healthcare). As a Community Foundation, we derive our granting capacity from citizens like you. Your gifts to us are invested to strike a balance between steady growth and income and preservation of assets. Investment income is used for grants that improve the quality of life in the communities we serve.

The Community Foundation of South Lake is recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) Nonprofit, Charitable Organization. (View our IRS Determination Letter.) We operate under the principle of endowment or perpetuity, meaning that gifts made to the Foundation will grow and continue to impact your community...now and forever. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Community Foundation of South Lake has grown to manage nearly $10 million in assets and has cumulatively awarded more than $4 million to local nonprofits and $400,000 in scholarships to students from South Lake County.

Present day...

In February, 2008 the South Lake County community celebrated the dedication of the George Hovis and Don Wickham Community and Nonprofit Resource Center. Completion of the new Community Foundation offices has ushered in an exciting new era for the Community Foundation of South Lake and has greatly enhanced the range of services that we can offer to both our donors and the nonprofits we serve. The George Hovis and Don Wickham Community and Nonprofit Resource Center has helped us solidify our position as the local leader in philanthropy.

By managing and investing donor funds, connecting donors with causes they feel passionately about, enabling donors to make informed decisions through research, and helping strengthen nonprofits we serve through education and grants, we at the Community Foundation, are fulfilling our mission to: provide leadership to enhance quality of life by identifying community needs and seeking philanthropic support as permanent funding to meet those needs.
